The Department of Arts Education came into existence in August, 2013 when it was carved out from former Department of Arts and Social Sciences Education. The Department of Arts and Social Sciences Education (former Departments of Educational Foundations 1981-2005) and Teacher Education (1978-1981) is the oldest Department in the Faculty of Education, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria. The Department of Arts Education currently runs seven (7) B.A. (Ed.) Programmes which are Arabic Education, Christian Studies Education, English Education, French Education, History Education, Islamic Studies Education and Yoruba Education.
At the Postgraduate level, the Department offers courses leading to M. Ed. and Ph. D. degrees in the following Programmes: Arabic Education, Comparative Education, Curriculum Development, English Language Education, History and Policy of Education, Mother-tongue Education, Philosophy of Education and Religious Studies Education. All the Programmes are through teaching and research.
The department is committed to the University’s mission of teaching, learning, research and community development services in the field of Arts Education. It is aimed at producing men and women who are well-trained in the facets of Arts Education with the purpose of meeting national and international needs in the area of Humanities Education
